A comparative newcomer to the city of Welland, the Hicks Lumber and Builders’ Supplies has developed rapidly under the impetus of Mr. G. F. Hicks. Founded in 1945 by Mr. Hicks, the company employed one man and one truck. There are now ten full time employees and a fleet of ten trucks. Mr. Hicks’ father was for some time General Superintendent of a large producing lumber company in Northern Ontario, and Mr. G.F. Hicks was associated with his father in business, and from him learned many of the fine points in the lumber business. Progressive in their methods, Hicks’ Lumber were the first in the Niagara district to steelband their shipments. The company provides everything for the home except cement and lime. This includes sidings, tile boards, hardwood floors, etc. The company is building a large warehouse to provide even better service to their customers. While Hicks Lumber is mainly retail in Welland, they also do a large wholesale business, purchasing lumber from coast to coast which is widely distributed. Delivery anywhere in the Niagara Peninsula is free of charge. Mr. G. F. Hicks was educated in the public schools and Collegiate Institute at Sturgeon Falls, Ont. where he also took a business course. After leaving Business College, Mr. Hicks entered the employ of the Abitibi Power and Paper Co. at Sturgeon Falls, where he spent the next two years in the research department. He then joined his father in the lumber business in Sturgeon Falls. In 1934, Mr. Hicks married the former Miss Blanche Kells and they have three daughters: June, fourteen; Gwen, twelve; and Diane, nine years of age. Mr. Hicks’ fraternal affiliations are with the local Lions Club; and the Masons (Merritt Branch), Welland. Mr. Hicks’ favorite recreations are fishing and hunting, though the demands of business do not allow too much time for either.
