In the passage of eighty-three years perhaps few of the old natural landmarks remain quite the same as they were in Welland County when William McClellan and his family drove their pioneer covered wagon through the trackless wastes behind its slow-moving oxteam into the forests, and finally came to rest in the neighborhood of what is now Niagara Township, Lincoln County. They had come from Cherry Valley in New York State, sturdy, courageous people, searching for a permanent home, and undismayed by Indian depredations and unescapable hardships sought until they found what they desired, in the promising untilled sections of Lincoln County. George B. McClellan, one of the descendants of this pioneering family, is now one of Welland County’s most substantial and esteemed citizens. Martin H. McClellan, the father of the subject of this review—who died in 1913—and his brother, Luther O. McClellan, were born in Virgil, Ont., and came to Welland County, settling just east of Fonthill; the brothers a fifty-acre farm which adjoined each heyinz other. �This old family of the pioneer days has, and is very proud of, a coat of arms, and the family history here appended reads like a romance, and some years ago in an article written in the Welland Tribune for the historical society which met in 1897, a story entitled, “Echoes of 1812”, of Captain Martin McClellan, as told by his grandson, Luth O. McClellan, the uncle of the subject of this review, as follows: — Captain Martin McClellan, was born in 1778, in Cherry Valley, New York. At the age of 12 the Indians became troublesome and barbarous with white people, so much so that they were obliged to sacrifice their property, forsake all and escape for their lives. His father, William McClellan, who was the greatgreat-grandfather of the subject of this sketch, was captured by the Indians, and rings were put in his nose and ears; he escaped with his wife and family, with the exception of one son,—Captain Martin McClellan—who was captured by the Indians and held a prisoner for three months. They took him to Ogdensburg and while returning with him to Cherry Valley, he was re-captured by the Whites and brought to Niagara, Ont., to his parents who had settled there, staying there for the remainder of their days, raising their three sons, John, William and Martin. John settled in Caledon, and lived to the age of 96; William settled in Beaverdams, and owned a farm there across which was fought the battle of that name; he lived to the age of 80; Martin remained on the old farm adjoining the Queen’s Bush at Niagara. His father, William McClellan, was the owner of considerable land in New York State, which was confiscated through the Indian trouble. Captain Martin McClellan was given a power of attorney by his father to dispose of the property that was surrendered; a large portion of which was never disposed of on account of the War of 1812 coming on, and unfortunately for his financial interests, owing to his early death in the war, nothing more was done in regard to the property. He was one of Canada’s true and loyal subjects, and stood up manfully to defend the country that was near and dear to him. He was killed at the Battle of Fort George at the early age of 34. He also fought in the Battle of Queenston Heights, and stood very close to his leader, the brave General Brock, when he fell at the foot of the mountain, afterwards being one of those chosen to carry their stricken leader to Laura Secord’s cottage. His son, John William McClellan was the father of Martin H., the father of the subject of this sketch, and Luther O., (brothers) of Fonthill. Captain McClellan’s other grandchildren were, Dr. Martin McClellan of Chicago; Dr. J. W. McClellan of California; Dr. Frank McClellan of Michigan; also the late Miss Mary Ann McClellan of Fonthill and the late Miss Elizabeth McClellan of Virgil, Ont. In the old St. Marks Church, Niagara, a tablet fastened to the wall bears the following inscription: — “In Memory of Captain Martin McClellan, aged 34 years, Charles Wright and W. M. �Cameron, in the 25th year of their age, of the 1st Regiment, Lincoln Militia, who gloriously fell on the 27th day of May, 1813; also Adjutant Lloyd, of the 8th King’s Regiment.” The evening before his death Captain Martin McClellan had a premonition and was deeply impressed with the feeling that he should go and see his wife and family, who had been taken from Niagara to Virgil for safety during the fighting. To his wife, he said: — “I have come to see you for the last time, I feel very strongly that this is my last day to live, here is my watch and purse, you will never see me again.” Before three o’clock the next day he fell, with three others who were buried with him, Cameron and Wright were relatives, and Lloyd, a near friend. Strange to say the bullet that caused his death penetrated his watch pocket. The watch and purse are both in the museum of relics at the Historical Society Building at Niagara, now Niagara-on-the-Lake. Inside the called, purse in his own handwriting is the following inscription: —*“Martin McClellan’s property, “Niagara, December 21st, 1812.” George B. McClellan, was born on December 24th, 1872, in Thorold Township, Welland County, Ont., and is the youngest son of Martin Henry McClellan who was born in Virgil, Ont., of the old stock that came from Cherry Valley, then a suburb of what is now New York City. George McClellan, obtained his early education in the pubile schools of Thorold Township, and at an early age left school and went to work on his father’s farm, where he continued for a number of years. On June 22nd, 1914, he became superintendent of the Industrial Home of Welland County; his father-in-law, John W. Hemmings was the first superintendent of this County Home, for eleven years from 1888, when the home was formerly opened; he having laid out the grounds which still show the evidences of his splendid handiwork. The County Home of Welland County, Ont., is a modern three-story brick building, with a boiler house and laundry adjoining the rear of the building with a hospital in connection. The main building houses eighty-one inmates. It is situated on 60 acres of ground, all of which is under cultivation, raising all vegetables used in the Home. Mr. McClellan was married on January 6th, 1897, to Miss Eva Hemmings, daughter of John Hemmings of Welland County, Ont.; and they have two daughters, Bessie, who is married to Kenneth Walker, living in Toronto, Ont., and they have one child, Ann Virginia; the other daughter, Elinor, is still attending school. Mr. McClellan in his social contacts is a member of the Masons, Wilson chapter, R.A.M., No. 64, Welland; Jacques de Molai Preceptory, Niagara Falls, Ont.; the Hindoo Koosh Grotto at Hamilton, and the Oddfellows. His hobby is agriculture in all of its phases.
