Subject
Daniel McCaw and his son John
Description
Black and white photograph of Daniel McCaw and his son John at his place of business, D. McCaw & Sons, c. 1870.
This may be the only known photograph of Daniel McCaw, who along with being well-known for his business D. McCaw & Sons at 87 East Main St. (across from the Courthouse) that operated between 1851-1972, he was also the first Chief Magistrate of Welland. Welland was incorporated as a village in 1858 and Daniel McCaw was elected to be its first Reeve that year.
The photograph unfortunately does not have any identifying information, so making the determination that this is Daniel and John was based on the following criteria:
The photo appears to be from the era between 1860-1880. The older man appears to be around 60, and the younger man in his late teens. In 1870 Daniel would have been 60 and John would have been 17. Also, it is a shoe business with what looks to be a father and son, and only McCaw's fits that description in Welland. They were also prominent enough to merit a photograph being taken of them inside their business, which fits with Daniel being the first Reeve and having been in business for 20 years at this time.
The first file has been touched up to remove blemishes, and the second file is the raw scan of the photograph.
