Description
Newspaper clippings featuring a complete reporting of the tragic accident of parachutist Elsie Storrow at a Welland air meet, May 27, 1933.
The newly formed Welland County Aero Club, in partnership with the St. Catharines Flying Club, organized a large celebratory air meet to open the new Welland-Crowland Airport (now Saint George Park) in south-west Welland (the airport/airfield did not last long).
As one of the attractions, parachutist Elsie Storrow from Toronto (her original name was Tetiana Shwediuk, born in Poland) was planning a 'delayed jump' where she would wait as long as possible before pulling the rip-cord. Tragically, while it was pulled it did not form a canopy to slow her descent, and she was killed when she hit the ground.
She was buried in Welland at Holy Cross Cemetery (Section 1, Row 6), and her headstone reads:
ELSIE STORROW
(TETIANA SHWEDIUK)
DIED AFTER A PARACHUTE
DESCENT IN WELLAND ONT.
MAY 27TH 1933
The 21 files all come from the Welland Tribune. Dates are as follows:
