Subject

Description
Scanned copy of James A. Gilchriese's journal, c. 1873.
James A. Gilchriese (1851-1904) was for a while the turn-key at the Welland County Courthouse and Gaol (the keeper of the county jail). At the time of this journal however, he was 22 years old and was working at the Welland Telegraph.
His journal, which spans 1873, gives a glimpse into the daily life of a young man living in Welland at the time, and he relates his impressions of his friends, the weather, his workplace, etc. A transcription of the journal is planned and will be included in this space. The journal was generously donated by his descendants, Fred and Julia Payne.
